Launch Complex 34 - Saturn 1 & 1B
Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died here in their Apollo 1 capsule fire atop their Saturn-1B on 27th January 1967. This site saw a large number of launches of Saturn 1 test vehicles prior to this fire. It was not used for many more launches after the fire and was later decommissioned as Saturn-1B launches moved to nearby LC-37 and then to LC-39. The concrete plinth and the Flame-buckets are all that remain today, dedicated to those that lost their lives here.
This mainly Photo-etched Brass kit will depict the two gantry towers, one fixed, one rolling-back on rails, used to prepare the Saturns and the various payloads launched. The kit will also include two Flame-buckets, although only one can be used at a time!
Currently, only a 1:144 scale kit is planned, which is aimed to work with RealSpace Models 1:144 Saturn 1B resin kit, the old Airfix plastic kits. If you would like me to consider another scale, please don't hesitate to e-mail me to let me know.
The new Apogee Components Saturn-1B in 1:70 scale looks good enough that I am considering a model of the tower if there is sufficient interest. Please let me know if you would consider one.
