Launch Complex 39 - Crawler Transporter
Local Copy (833K)
|
The Crawler Transporters have been moving rockets and structures around Launch Complex 39 for about 35 years. They are capable of 2 mph when unloaded, and 1 mph when carrying a Saturn V/Space Shuttle to a pad.
The Crawlers have eight gigantic tracks which are steerable, and have a tilt mechanism to keep platforms horizontal when climbing the ramp to the pads.
This model is in the planning stages right now. The Crawlers will be modelled, mainly, in photo-etch brass. It is planned to have free-wheeling tracks to allow models to be rolled - should the modeller wish. It may also have a working steering system and tilt mechanism - as long as it will not compromise the strength of the model significantly.
It is being designed to happily support the weight of other models in the LCM range, such as the Apollo/Saturn Mobile Launcher, the Apollo/Saturn Mobile Service Structure along with the weight of its associated rocket models.
